“When you are content to be simply yourself, and don’t compare or compete, everybody will respect you.”
– Lao Tzu
What do you do when you’re not working?
When Jake is not working, he primarily enjoys spending time with his lovely and talented wife, Emily, and his Labrador-McNab rescue, Duncan. As for hobbies, Jake enjoys running, screenwriting, playing indoor soccer, surfing, playing guitar, producing music, reading weird fiction and history, cooking one-pot meals and marinated chicken from around the world, and rooting for UCLA basketball and football, the Buffalo Bills (he married into Bills Mafia), the Padres, and Everton Football Club.
If you were to look back from the age of 80 and tell yourself anything what would it be?
Jake would tell himself to not worry about being so practical—there are more doors open than you think.
What’s one fact about your education or upbringing that few people know?
Jake was a campus tour guide at UCLA, a coveted, on-campus, paying gig.
What are two things on your bucket list?
1. Attending a home game at Goodison Park, home of Everton Football Club, before it’s demolished
2. Completing a multi-day hut-to-hut mountain hike, whether in the Sierras, the Alps (original or Japanese), the Pyrenees, or the Andes.
Apart from a brief detour to UCLA as an undergraduate, Jake has lived nearly his entire life in San Diego. He currently calls North Park home and enjoys the boutique coffeehouses, unique restaurants, and craft breweries that neighborhood has to offer. He is an avid sports fan, as a supporter of the UCLA Bruins, the Padres, and Everton FC (the other team in Liverpool). He enjoys running, hiking, playing guitar and producing music, and playing indoor soccer on weeknights. His literal claim to fame is a Jeopardy! championship in 2012.
Jake joined Gupta Evans and Associates after spending two years with Dinsmore & Shohl. At his prior firm, he gained extensive experience in real estate and business litigation, including breach of warranty and products litigation. Prior to that, Jake practiced at a large national law firm in intellectual property and commercial litigation.
Jake brings his litigation and counseling expertise to three main practice areas: real estate litigation, land use, and cannabis/hemp. In his real estate practice, Jake handles nondisclosure, title, and easement disputes. He also has deep experience in real estate matters on the lending side, including those related to hard money lending and foreclosure. His land use practice is far reaching, including disputes related to zoning issues, water rights and water quality issues, inverse condemnation claims, and writs of mandate brought against public entities.
Jake is also an advocate for the emerging and expanding legal cannabis and hemp industries, using his thorough knowledge of the constantly evolving laws, statutes, and regulations applicable to guide his clients through any regulatory or business disputes they may be experiencing. As part of his cannabis law practice, Jake has experience in writ of mandate proceedings between retail operations and public entities, private money lending disputes, and internal investor/partner conflicts.
Jake graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2010 and graduated magna cum laude and Order of the Coif from the University of San Diego School of Law in 2014. In law school, Jake was a Lead Articles Editor for the San Diego Law Review and served as a judicial extern for Judge Janis Sammartino of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California.
